Roulette, a Casino favorite, originated in 18th century France. Roulette has a French origin and means little wheel. Revolving around a wheel consisting of a spinning disk divided into sections, Roulette is one addictive game to play. In Roulette, the player tosses a ball on the wheel, and both the ball and wheel keep rolling until it comes to a stop. The precision of the section the ball ends in determines the triumph or loss of the player.

Although heavily dependent on the player’s luck, a comprehensive understanding of Roulette can come in handy for making safer bets. With acquired experience and agility, one can even turn the game around in their favour. To emerge victorious and more prosperous than before, a player has to understand Roulette to formulate some hidden tricks thoroughly.

Roulette can turn into an addiction, so much so that people too engrossed with it even put hefty amounts of their wealth and assets at stake. Roulette Rules

Bets

Since the entire game of Roulette revolves around betting, it is only appropriate to start with explaining the different bets placed in it. The primary bets common between the American and European versions of Roulette are below.

Evens

  • Red/ Rouge: A red number
  • Black/Noir: A black number
  • Even/Pair: An even number
  • Odd/ Impair: An odd number
  • Low bet/ Manque: Numbers from 1 to 18, ( Manque is the French term for ‘failed’, which is used in Roulette when the ball ends up on a number below or equal to 18)
  • High bet/ Passe: Numbers from 19 to 36, ( Passe is the French term for ‘passed’, which is used in Roulette when the ball ends up on a number beyond the centre point)

2 to 1

  • First dozen/ Premiere Douzaine: Numbers from 1to 12 ( The square imprinted with 12P on the French mat)
  • Middle dozen/ Moyenne Douzaine: Numbers from 13 to 24 ( The square imprinted with 12M on the French mat)
  • Last dozen/ Dernier Douzaine: Numbers from 25 to 36 ( The square imprinted with 12 D on the French mat)
  • Column Bet/ Colonne: A column consisting of 12 numbers ( The particular square at the end of one of the three twelve numbered columns)

 Bigger Odds

  • 5 to 1- Line Bet/Sixain: 6 numbers (To bet on the two rows of three numbers, the stake should be on the intersection of the two edges)
  • 8 to 1- Corner Bet/ Carre: 4 numbers ( The stake needs to be at the intersection of a square of four numbers)
  • 11 to 1- Street Bet/ Carre Simple or Transversale: a row consisting of three numbers ( The stake needs to be halfway over the ending line of the row of three numbers to be bet on)
  • 17 to 1- Split Bet/ En Chaval: A pair of numbers ( The stake needs to be across the dividing line between the two betting numbers)
  • 35 to 1 – Straight Up/ En Plein: A single number ( The stake needs to be on the box of that specific number. Betting on zero is also allowed)

*Note:

  • Bets placed on six or lesser numbers are Inside Bets.
  • Bets placed on twelve or more numbers are Outside Bets.

European Roulette Rules

In Roulette, a simple game to play, in each turn, bets are placed for multiple players using different coloured chips for identification. Once all bets are placed, the croupier spins the wheel while rolling the ball in the opposing direction. The winner is announced as soon as the spinning stops and the ball rests in a slot. The reward is collected from the bets placed by the losers and presented to the winner. Apart from these simplistic rules, here are some additional ones.

En Prison Rule

Meaning “in prison”, this rule is applicable only on even bets. When the result turns out to be zero, the player is presented with two options.

  • Reclaim one half of the bet and lose the other.
  • Leave the present bet and start a fresh one. If the follow-up bet turns zero again, the player loses the bet. If the outcome is similar to the bet, the player’s money is returned.

La Partage Rule

With this rule, the player doesn’t get any choice or a second chance. If the bet is lost the first time, it is the outcome.

Maximum and Minimum Stakes

In casinos, the inside bet of each player has to exceed the minimum stake.

In the case of maximum stakes, it is already listed for straight-up bets and others, increasing proportionally. A pair of numbers is usually double the straight-up bets and quadrupled for a corner bet.

North American Roulette Rules

The rules of American Roulette are more or less similar to the European version, with only a few exceptions. Here are the differentiating rules:

  • The American Roulette wheels have double zeroes in place of one. It is why all bets, except the direct bets on zero, are lost if the ball ends up at either of the two zeroes.
  • Basket bet – Placed only in American Casinos, the placement of stakes in a basket bet is similar to that of a line bet. The bet odds are pretty thin as it usually pays out 6 to 1.

Now that we’re done with the long list of rules let’s discuss the simple steps altogether for one last time.

  1. Decide on the amount you’d like to bet on.
  2. Select your chips and place your bet.
  3. Once all bets are placed, the croupier spins the wheel and the ball simultaneously in opposite directions.
  4. The wheel comes to a stop, and the ball settles in multiple sections.
  5. The player with the real bet wins the stakes of others based on the type and size of the bet. Quite simple.
